This year was Cain and Savannah's first year to carve their own pumpkins. In the past we used Mr. Potato Head body parts or paint to decorate their pumpkins. I decided they were ready so we bought them each a child's carving kit. We had our tradition Halloween dinner hot dog mummies and cookies for dessert then they picked out their designs. I assisted by drawing design on pumpkin and used a toothpick to punch small holes so they could see thier design. I even shaded in the part that needed to be cut out with a marker and they were set to carve. Savannah was really into it. She didn't want my help but Cain need some assistance. Hers is the face and his is a bat image.

This is what Cain saw on our walk.
He did pretty good using a real camera. He found the spider in our backyard all by himself and took that picture. Cool! See post below for other pictures of things we saw on our walk.
Friday Fun - Looking for critters.
We had lots of fun just walking around our yard and neighborhood looking for critters of all kinds. We saw a ladybug, caterpillar, grasshopper, racoon tracks, snake skeleton, bug skeleton, dragonflies, butterflies and a frog. Both kids had cameras and took their own photos. This was Cain's first time using a camera. I will post his pics later but I think he did a great job. I think Savvy deleted most of her pictures because she kept taking pictures after we got home. Oh well, she had fun all evening taking pictures.

The Princess and the Paleontologist
The kiddos spent today inside playing dress-up. I have missed watching them dress up. It is so funny to watchhow they get into character. Cain was a paleontologist today. He went into his room and came out with camo hat, fly fishing vest (a very good investment although he has never used it for fishing), whack a mole hammer, part of ninja sword, a brush and his night vision goggles (which were used to help him locate the bones underground). He has always been so creative. He also enjoyed playing a game called dinosaur digg at 4kids.tv.com it was fun and educational. Savannah was a "real Princess". She had me fix her hair in a bun because that is how real Princess wears her hair. She watched Barbie Princess and the Pauper movie and played with her Disney Princess dolls. She told me all real Princess' live at Disney World and she wanted to know when we were going to move there.
I made each of them a special lunch. He had a PBJ and some (marshmallow) dinosaur bones and she had a variety of finger foods served in cupcake liners. The both enjoyed themselves even if they had to stay inside because of weather and their colds. I enjoyed watching my babies play I am so blessed to be able to stay at home with them.
Not much has changed.
This week Cain and Savannah have entertained themselves for three days playing with a box. It took me back to 2005 when we got a package from G.G. and the kiddos played in it for days once we got rid of the packing peanuts. The packing stuff was everywhere as you can see. I had to give them baths to get it off them because of all the static. They had such a blast that day. Who would have thought a box could be so entertaining and think of all the money I could have saved

Easter cookies
Today I made more cookies. Over the weekend I purchased Wilton color flow icing mix. It worked a lot better than the homemade royal icing. I was in a hurry to get homework started with Cain so I got a little messy. Definately a project to do while the kids are at school so I can take my time. DH and both kids really liked them.
Cookies for the teacher.
I made these cookies for Cain's teacher since last Friday was her last day before maternity leave. They are supposed to look like little boy babies. I used a homemade royal icing. I hear she liked them as well as the rest of his class. So that's all that matters.

Baby gifts.
Cain's teacher is having a little boy. I made these bibs to give her has a gift. I used blue chenille on the back of the car bib. The tie bib is made using a brown cotton and the blue/brown hounds tooth fabric same as the tie. I used a layered batting in this bib to help keep baby dry. The tie and car are appliqued onto fabric before bibs are constructed. I made a onesie with brown car applique to match bib. I hope she likes them.

St. Patrick's Day cupcake take two!
I couldn't leave it alone I had to add these cute little Leprechauns that I downloaded from http://gourmetmomonthego.blogspot.com. Aren't they cute! She has some great ideas so head on over and check her out. I have made the edible crayons from her site and the kiddos love them. You can download and print out crayon labels from her site as well. This makes a great treat for Friday treat day at school.
Have a great day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Made these rainbow cupcakes for Savvy's kindergarten class. They are easy to make but next time I plan to reverse the order of colored batter. The recipe online said to start with purple, blue, green, yellow, orange then red. It seems backwards when you cut it the bow shape is upside down with purple on top. You can make a cake using the same recipe. http://www.recipezaar.com/Rainbow-cake or http://recipe.aol.com/recipe/rainbow . I made my cupcakes using a Betty Crocker yellow cake mix and gel food coloring. White buttercream icing to look like clouds. I plan to put a gold foiled coin in the next batch to add to decoration for St. Patrick's day. Hope they enjoy!

A little Seuss and sickness.
The kiddos have the flu along with cabin fever. They are starting to feel better but the fever keeps coming back. Today we made homemade playdough (can't believe this was my first time), Dr. Suess hat treats, read Seuss books and movies. I used a recipe I got from http://www.fun.familyeducation.com that didn't have to be cooked and that I had all the ingredients to. The hats were made with things I had in the pantry - white choc., fruit roll-ups, marshmallows, and ritz crackers. I plan to make these for kiddos classes on Monday so I need some opinions. If anyone wants to share a comment I would appreciate it.
